The Incredible Side Effects of Taking CBD With Melatonin

Trying to get a solid night’s sleep when you suffer from insomnia is a truly frustrating challenge that so many Americans unfortunately deal with. If you struggle with this chronic issue, we are here to let you in on a way to sleep deeper and overall so much better by combining CBD and melatonin. You heard that right!

Eat This, Not That! spoke with Chris Adlakha, PharmD of Elevated Wellness who shares with us, “CBD can help regulate REM sleep for deeper and longer sleep, while melatonin helps with sleep onset. CBD on its own is often not very sedating, so melatonin can really help you fall asleep quicker.” Read on to learn more about the positive effects CBD and melatonin can have on your nighttime snooze. CBD can be ultra-effective when it comes to getting a great night’s rest

CBD is so effective when it comes to improving your sleep, and Adlakha explains exactly why. Many negative symptoms you may be feeling from certain conditions can be relieved by taking CBD. Some conditions include inflammation, restless leg syndrome, stress, over-active minds, mental anguish, light or insufficient REM sleep, pain, overly vivid dreaming, and just about every condition you may be dealing with. Chronic issues can negatively impact your ability to sleep. The fact that CBD can address just about all of these things—based on the particular formulation—CBD is a natural choice to help you get the restful Z’s you are longing for.

Adlakha does caution, “This doesn’t mean any CBD product will help. Really, people should look for CBD products that contain more indica-dominant cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids (CBN, THC, Myrcene, Linalool, etc), or find a solution that combines cannabis compounds and melatonin, or even other adaptogens or nootropics (like L-theanine, Pharma-GABA, etc.).”

The Sleep Aid Max is “a full spectrum CBD Tincture” infused with Premium Grade Melatonin for solid relaxation

If you’re having difficulty falling and staying asleep, it’s always wise to try to identify what may be causing the problem in the first place. Adlakha recommends the Sleep Aid Max, which is made to be “fail-safe.” This product works on the majority of problems that cause sleep-related issues. And if you’re wondering what makes this product so effective, Adlakha explains that their sleeping aids are “fully ultrasonic homogenized.” That means your body absorbs them more, also known as bioavailability. 6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

The 2000mg Sleep Aid Tincture, according to Adlakha, “is a CBD isolate with 300mg of melatonin (66.6mg CBD / 10mg melatonin per mL) suspended in an organic MCT oil.” He also tells us, “Sleep Aid MAX is a full spectrum tincture with boosted CBN and THC, with a light (almost micro) dose of melatonin, and includes a terpene infusion with indica-based cannabis terpenes that are organic and kosher,” adding, “The Sleep Aid MAX is also ultrasonic homogenized into organic MCT oil.”

If you decide to use the product, it’s recommended to take it about 1/2 hour to 1 hour prior to heading to sleep. You’ll put 1/2 to 1 ml underneath your tongue, keep it there for around 60 seconds, and then swallow. Consistency is strongly recommended—it should be taken each night to achieve the best results. On average, the product’s highest results seem to occur between 2 to 3 hours after dosing, although some reach peak performance earlier or later since everyone’s body chemistry varies. Adlakha also stresses, “We like to recommend users (especially new to cannabis users) take it low and slow. In other words, they should start with a lower dose and try that for a few nights (up to 7 nights) before deciding to increase their dosage. Some may only need to take as needed, and that’s completely okay as well.”

Taking CBD or cannabis compounds with melatonin could help with the side effects of taking melatonin by itself

In case you are wondering, melatonin by itself can totally be a sleep helper and assist with longer REM sleep, but Adlakha warns, “There can be inherent issues for certain body chemistries.” The reason is simple. Some individuals are suddenly awakened by pretty realistic dreams that can be a reaction to taking melatonin by itself. Melatonin also won’t be much of a pain reliever or aid with issues such as stress, restless leg syndrome, etc.

Adlakha advises, “Having CBD or cannabis compounds along with melatonin can help with issues that affect sleep, but can also calm down some of the side effects involved with melatonin, like excessive vivid dreaming/nightmares, etc. We believe it’s not entirely a good idea to rely on melatonin alone, as users tend to have to take more and more over time.” Too much melatonin can actually compromise the body’s natural production of melatonin. Supplementing with cannabis compounds can potentially avoid that risk—especially if you use a cannabis solution that contains minimal to no melatonin. (The Sleep Aid MAX and Terpene Infused Relax Line contain absolutely no melatonin).

This powerhouse duo can address greater sleep issues that negatively impact Z’s

Cannabis and melatonin make a great combo for individuals with greater sleep issues, such as difficulty getting to sleep because of an overactive mind, or inflammation and pain that negatively impact sleep. The two products together have been majorly successful recently.

Adlakha stresses, “Melatonin may not be entirely necessary if the right formulation of cannabis chemicals is present in the product.” He explains if you’re able to repair your sleep problem successfully without supplementing with melatonin (or higher melatonin doses), you’re on a good track. Interestingly, the human body typically produces enough melatonin on its own to work well with the dose of CBD. “Some people really want the melatonin included, and some body chemistries lack the ability to produce sufficient levels of natural melatonin, which makes supplementing CBD with melatonin a helpful, useful, and effective addition,” he explains.

Medication tips

To begin with, the following is a brief explanation of available research and information.

It’s important to clarify that both CBD oil and melatonin together can interact with other medications you may be taking. So, before following any of the proceeding information, we suggest you look to obtain your doctor’s consent.

The doses of either CBD oil or melatonin can vary if you’re taking them together for a night of better sleep.

In general, the dosage will depend on an array of factors such as age, weight, severity of insomnia, and other health conditions you may be experiencing. More on dosage shortly.

There is still no solid validity or reliability that taking CBD oil and melatonin together helps better sleep. So, only your doctor or relevant health professional can guide you on what’s good for you and your condition.

How CBD oil and melatonin work

In order to understand more about how these elements work together, let’s recap on both components.

Melatonin, in simple terms, is a hormone made by the pineal gland. It helps your body know when it’s time to sleep and wake up.

In other words, this hormone plays a crucial role in regulating your sleep-wake-up cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm.

Normally, your body makes more melatonin at night. The production of this hormone starts after sunset and reduces in the morning. Being exposed to harsh light in the late evening or at night can block melatonin production.

The production of melatonin in the body is commonly affected by factors such as age and exposure to artificial light.

This is especially relevant to current generations as they are regularly exposed to artificial light through phones, tablets, and computers. Therefore, melatonin production is treating affected.

The result of having insufficient melatonin production is insomnia or other sleep-related problems.

This is why many people will use melatonin supplements to treat their sleep problems.

These supplements work by activating the melatonin receptors in the brain, known as MT1 and MT2 receptors.

These receptors are the ones that inform or send signals to your brain that it’s time to sleep. Also, melatonin helps with the following as well:

  • Alleviating jet lag
  • Treating insomnia efficiency and quality
  • Minimizing the times you wake up during your sleep
  • Reducing sleep latency
  • Balancing the sleep cycles for people who go through complete or partial blindness

CBD oil

CBD oil, also known as cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive extract of the cannabis plant. It’s a supplement that’s recently becoming more popular.

CBD oil is commonly used to help with anxiety, stress, mood swings, immunity, appetite, digestion, metabolism, inflammatory responses, insomnia, other sleeping disorders, and different chronic pains.

CBD oil works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) through cannabinoid receptors found all over the body.

There are two types of endocannabinoid receptors; CB-1 and CB-2:

  • CB-1 receptors are more active in the central nervous system
  • CB-2 receptors are more active in the immune system

The ECS regulates many vital bodily functions, which help in maintaining balance within the body.

It’s through these receptors and interactions that CBD oil appears to be able to affect many of the body’s functions, including your sleep-wake cycles.

Connections between CBD oil and melatonin taken together

There is indeed a connection between CBD oil and melatonin.

Firstly, it’s that both have a strong positive impact on your sleep-wake cycle, especially helping with insomnia.

Secondly, the MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptors and CB-1 and CB-2 CBD receptors that influence sleep fall into the same group called G-protein coupled receptors.

This means they have a similar structure, process, and mechanism in which they influence the process of the sleep-wake cycle.

It’s this connection between CBD oil and melatonin that makes their benefits on sleep complement one other.

Is taking CBD oil with Melatonin safe?

Further research is necessary to validate this statement, but in general, both are safe to take together.

Both elements present naturally beneficial effects on sleep, so taking them together can be more effective, especially for insomnia.

But as we always advise, consult your doctor before making any changes.

To support this further, melatonin reverses hormonal disruption triggered by external factors supporting faster sleep.

On the other hand, CBD oil can help alleviate anxiety and stress symptoms, supporting a night of quality sleep.

As such, both CBD oil and melatonin combined can offer you a more sustained level of quality sleep, with minimal waking patterns.

The right dose for taking CBD oil with melatonin

Although taking both together is generally considered safe, make sure you don’t overload sleeping substances.

This can make your day inactive and drowsy. Your dose should help you with a quality sleep at night to make sure you are alert, active, productive, and happy during the day.

When it comes to finding the right dose for taking CDB oil with melatonin, start with the lowest dose possible. And as directed by your doctor, gradually increase your dose until you feel the balanced effects.

With that being said, below, we’ve added a short guide for each CBD oil and melatonin dose that can help you with safe dosing.

Melatonin dosage

Melatonin is often sold in standard doses of 1-milligram tablets. So you can use this standard dose and split it into two nights.

Cut the tablet into two and take one half each night. Even a small dose of 0.3 to 0.5 milligrams is still effective, depending on your condition.

Some may require doses such as 5 mg, but they may come with some side effects such as headaches, nausea, weird dreams, and wooziness.

Now taking high doses of melatonin, especially anything higher than 5mg, is seen to be ineffective. So, taking a dose higher than 5mg will be unnecessary and is not worth the side effects.

CBD Oil dosage

The effects of CBD oil for sleep or insomnia are heavily dependent on the dose.

When taken in small amounts, it may act as a stimulant. However, taking large doses can induce sedation.

This is why figuring out the right dose is important with CBD oil.

The good news is that CBD has not been reported to have any adverse or fatal side effects. So, while you’re free to experiment, it’s advisory to keep it moderate as it can and does show mild side effects.

10 mg of CBD oil is a good starting point. Low doses of CBD oil can provide stimulating effects. As a general rule, consider 0.25 mg for every one pound of body weight. So, for an average 200-pound adult, 50 mg would be a guideline dose.

If you need a stronger dose, then consider 0.5 mg for every one pound of body weight. So again, for a 200-pound adult, that would be a dose of 100 mg to experience stronger effects.

Closing thoughts

We hope this has provided you with an overview of whether to take CBD oil with melatonin. As always, consult your doctor before making any potentially significant changes to your medications.
