How to take CBD oil?
CBD is the new buzz-word in many wellness circles. Among influencers, athletes and celebrities, there seems to be a growing recognition that this all-natural oil is a key to improved health. So, if you’re interested in trying CBD out for yourself, look no further – this article will show you how.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating compound found in relative abundance in the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa).
It is the main active ingredient in hemp-based products, including oils, tinctures, edibles, topicals, capsules and skin care products.
CBD has been used by humans for thousands of years for its various therapeutic properties. Today, it is the subject of mounting scientific research, and in recent years has enjoyed a sudden (and ongoing) rise in popularity.
Types of Cannabinoids
One of over 100 natural components, CBD is a cannabinoid found within the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). While there are many other cannabinoids, the most common are THC, CBD, CBN, CBC, and CBG.
Despite being derived from the same plant, each cannabinoid can have very different effects on the body when consumed.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the intoxicating element of the cannabis plant known to get you ‘high’. CBD products are purified to remove as much THC content as possible, in order to enable the user to get the health benefits of CBD without the potentially unsafe side-effects of THC.
How Does CBD Work in the Human Body?
CBD influences the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a natural function within our body which helps to regulate a wide range of cognitive and physiological processes, including mood, appetite, sleep and pain.
Ultimately, the endocannabinoid system plays an essential role in keeping our body balanced and functioning properly. Within the endocannabinoid system is a network of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system. Phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant) such as CBD and THC, naturally bind to these cells in a similar way to neurotransmitters and can alter various mental and physical functions. For example, one study showed how CBD protects nerves from damage and acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory.
There’s also research to suggest that CBD can be used to help manage a variety of other ailments, such as anxiety, insomnia and long-term pain conditions.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Take?
The standard recommended CBD oil dosage is 1 to 2 drops twice a day and we recommend that you do not exceed 15 drops per day. However, the amount of CBD you should take depends on the individual, so we have put together the guide below to help you get started.
As everybody’s biochemistry is different, the effects of CBD can be different from one person to another. The CBD oil dosage for any individual depends on several factors including the individual’s weight and body chemistry. Therefore, we always recommend starting with a lower strength and dosage. Although it doesn’t take long for CBD to be absorbed by your body (around 40-60 minutes if taking it sublingually), we would also recommend making sure that you take it consistently for at least a week to gauge it’s effects. Once you have a better idea of how CBD works for you, you can then adjust your strength or dosage accordingly.
Although anecdotal evidence may be helpful in determining your ideal CBD dose, it’s important to remember that any suggestions you might find online are just that – suggestions. Because CBD oil isn’t a medication – and we don’t market it as such – you will not find specific CBD oil dosage recommendations here. What we can do, though, is arm you with the information necessary to help you determine your ideal CBD dose on your own.

Which CBD Oil Strength Should I Buy?
Our flavoured CBD tongue drops are available in three strengths; 200mg, 400mg and 800mg.
We find that for most customers, 200mg is a good strength to start with. We recommend initially taking one to two drops twice per day and you can then increase the amount of drops you take (up to 15 per day) if required.
If you find that 200mg isn’t strong enough, you could then move up to the 400mg strength.
There is, however, no reason not to go straight to our highest strength of 800mg. The higher the strength of the oil, the more CBD you will get per drop (as you will see illustrated below), so this can be more cost-effective if you are taking a higher number of drops each day.
How to Calculate Your Optimal CBD Oil Dosage
The effects of CBD oil can vary from person to person, but it’s usually best to start off with a lower strength to see how that works for you and then you can increase the dosage or change to a higher strength if you feel it is required.
Our CBD oil tongue drops come in 15 ml bottles and we recommend starting with a dosage of 1-2 drops twice daily. Each bottle contains approximately 300 doses of CBD oil at around 0.05 ml per drop. We label our products by milligram strength as opposed to by percentage as we believe percentage strengths can be misleading for the reasons we discuss in this blog.
When you look at the label on a bottle of our CBD oil drops, you’ll see the mg of CBD that the bottle contains. Divide that amount by 300 to determine how much CBD is in each drop. Using that formula, we find that:
- 200 mg bottles of CBD oil contain about 0.67 mg CBD per drop
- 400 mg bottles of CBD oil contain about 1.33 mg CBD per drop
- 800 mg bottles of CBD oil contain about 2.66 mg CBD per drop
You can use the guidelines above to help determine your ideal dose.
What to do if 1-2 drops isn’t having the desired effect
As mentioned above, various factors can affect the amount of CBD you need to take. It’s worth bearing in mind that working out your ideal dosage and strength can be trial and error, so don’t give up if you’ve only tried a lower strength or taking just a couple of drops a day.
If you find that 1-2 drops of CBD once or twice a day isn’t right for you, we suggest that you steadily increase the amount of drops as required.
If you’ve started off with a lower strength such as our 200mg CBD oil and are not experiencing any effects, you may find a 400mg or 800mg strength oil is more suitable for you. These can be purchased from our online store. Simply select which strength oil you would like from the shop page, then choose your flavour.
Ingesting Processes CBD More Slowly Than Sub Lingually
When you take our CBD oil drops, we recommend holding the oil under your tongue for 60-90 seconds before swallowing. Holding the oil under your tongue allows your body to absorb the CBD sublingually, which produces effects within minutes and metabolises with a high bioavailability (the proportion which enters the circulation when introduced into the body). Any CBD remaining in the oil under your tongue before swallowing is then processed by your digestive system.
Since it can take the digestive system up to 90 minutes to metabolise when ingested in food and drink., you should start with a low CBD oil dose. When you have become familiar with how CBD interacts with your body, increase your dose gradually until you achieve the desired effect.
Find out more about the differences in bioavailability (the proportion which enters the circulation when introduced into the body) between ingesting in food and drink and taking under the tongue (sub lingually) in our blog.
CBD Has No Known Toxic Dose
So far, researchers have not discovered any dose of CBD that is dangerous or toxic to humans – so you can feel free to experiment until you find the dose that works for you.
