Filip was the first modder to add drugs to The Sims that can be used and consumed by Sim people. Previous appearances had been merely decorative, such as taking a ‘vase’ object and reprogramming it to look like a cannabis plant. He “started by trying to reprogram the game to allow players to actually snort a line of coke,” and went further from there– much, much, further.
Over the past eighteen years, The Sims has become one of the most successful computer games of all time. It has millions of users building virtual houses, filling them up with virtual furniture, plants, animals, and other stuff, and controlling the lives of the billions of simulated, or ‘Sim,’ people who live there. And just like real life consumer culture, these Sims can get more and more new stuff with downloadable mods created by other users. Now, finally, your Sims can have cannabis, thanks to the Basemental mod, created by a modder called Filip. Herb.co interviewed him, to find out exactly how he did it.
Basemental includes cannabis, MDMA, cocaine, and amphetamines, as well as new abilities, such as drug dealing. Each drug affects its Sim user like the real one would, by increasing mood, energy, and productivity, keeping them awake, or making them very sleepy. Sims can grow cannabis, and make money dealing drugs. Sims can have hangovers and overdoses, both fatal and non-fatal. The extent of the realism is pretty shocking although, apparently, Filip has so far declined requests to add heroin to the game. What he does show, he says, he shows for the sake of realism and awareness, both good and bad.
“I don’t really want to make this mod into a glorification of drug use,” Filip told Kotaku, “that’s why it’s important to have an addiction system, fatal and non-fatal drug use.”
Im using the basemental drugs mod to grow this cannabis. I built an indoor grow room on the custom map inner block. I grew OG Kush, AK-47, Purple haze. I harvested these plants maybe 5 times total an i have over 500 peices of uncured weed from each strain. I did evolve some of the plants which will make the quality better. I also just built a (Retail) Legal Weed Store ingame and i have a way bigger grow room now. The next grow i am going to fuse ALL the different strains from some splices i took.
This mod is amazing if you really want to grow some weed, Or do other drugs. Its ALOT of work to grow this many plants you have to water the plants every single day. And it takes a good 2-3 in game hours by yourself. I actually started a club and we had meetings to water the plants lol. Ima post more pics of my grows soon. I just started playing sims 4 last week and finnaly switched from sims 3..
The first thing you’ll need to do is get the seeds. You can do this by purchasing the traditional base game planter, clicking on it and buying Cannabis seeds ($350). They’ll instantly appear in your inventory. You can also purchase these seeds through the computer via the Basemental Drugs Headshop. Same price but they’ll be delivered to you by mail. The last option is to purchase them from Build/Buy mode.
My Sim is starting out with zero gardening skills and zero weed dealing skills. To make the process more successful and profitable you’ll want much higher skill levels for both. Remember, weed dealing skills up once you become a drug dealer and keep selling to your clients.
Purchase Weed Jars
The higher your weed dealing skill the better weed curing jars you can purchase. The basic “empty weed jar” is $12 on the computer using the Basemental Headshop. This jar requires 15 uncured buds of the same strain to start the curing process. It will take 48 hours for the buds to cure.
When the weed has fully grown you can harvest it into your inventory and then add it to the cure jars. Once cured you can sell to your clients, smoke it yourself, or store it. Uncured buds can be replanted to expand your weed growing empire.
