One of the worst blizzards to hit New York was a Nor’easter known as the Great Blizzard of 1888.The storm blew in from the south, traveling up the East Coast and dropped over 40 inches of snow in a blinding whirl of white. About 2000 years earlier, a more palatable spiral of bean diversity was making its way up from much further south- South America. One of these strains eventually blew into Italy and later returned to New York as Kwintis or Early Riser. Today this hearty pole bean has become the Romano, dubbed Northeaster. Early to mature, Northeaster will produce heaps of delectable pods. If you’re a seed saver, let the pods dry on the vines and they will precipitate mounds of white beans that don’t require gloves and a shovel.

Our Location

Nikos grows hers on tripods of long lashed poles. Gloria Seigars of New Sweden, ME, employs tall limber ash saplings that can be bent double without breaking. “Wired together, several of them make a nifty arbor and grand entrance to the vegetable garden.” Will Bonsall suggests letting them climb sunflower stalks. Give the sunflowers a two-week head start.
