CBD from orange peels: A different CBD story
A new CBD made from orange peel could signal a breakthrough for the industry and offer access that was once unimaginable.
Cannabidiol is being put into everything these days, from beverages to bath bombs and dog treats. Many tout it as the answer to anxiety, sleep issues and pain relief. However, the THC contents in CBD can be limiting.
Whether its due to a job that requires drug testing or personal preference, many have to avoid CBD altogether—or do they?
Orange is the new green
The market is now seeing CBD supplements derived from other plants such as orange peel or hops.
One company that wants to make CBD accessible for all is Peels, a wellness company founded by 11-year NFL veteran and CEO Chris Hetherington.
The company produces molecularly-identical CBD without a trace of THC or toxic impurities commonly found in cannabis and hemp-derived CBD products. With both awards and certifications from Clean Label Project, Peels claims their CBD oil is the purest and safest CBD product on the market.
How do you make CBD from oranges?
Peels’ proprietary process of deriving CBD from orange peels is called Cyclic Terpene Assembly. This process combines terpenes from orange peels with olivetol, a naturally occurring organic compound, under heat and pressure in the presence of a catalyst. After minimal further processing, the result is crystalline CBD with high purity and consistency.
Peels’ molecularly identical CBD acts in the body in the same way and has the same holistic benefits as cannabis- and hemp-derived CBD, but without the impurities and variability associated with cannabis and hemp-derived CBD. CBD interacts with the human endocannabinoid system to deliver powerful all-natural results.

Peels CBD Review (October 2021)
Peels is a brand that makes CBD out of orange peels instead of hemp. The company offers third-party tested, THC-free CBD oil and is working on more products.
Bottom line: Peels is an innovative option if you’re looking for hemp-free, THC-free CBD oil.
- Made from orange peels rather than hemp/cannabis
- Completely free of all traces of THC
- Comprehensive third-party testing
- Only one CBD oil strength option
Overall Rating: 4/5
Product Lineup 3/5
We’d like to see more CBD oil strengths as well as other products but we like the company’s innovation.
Peels’ products cost similar to the average price point for CBD. But you’re still getting reasonable value because of the unique, hemp-free production method.
Hemp Quality 4/5
Peels uses orange peels instead of hemp to make CBD. We’d like to see more information about the precise process, like where the orange peels are sourced from.
Third-Party Testing 5/5
The company provides complete, up-to-date potency and contaminant third-party test results. The test reports confirm that you’re getting as much CBD as advertised.
Customer Service & Reputation 4/5
Peels is a relatively young brand but its customer reviews are positive.
Table of Contents
Founded by ex-NFL player Chris Hetherington in 2019, Peels stands out for making CBD oil from orange peels rather than hemp. This makes it a great option for people who want to completely avoid cannabis and THC.
The company uses a unique process called Cyclic Terpene Assembly (CTA) to turn terpenes found in orange peel into cannabidiol (CBD). The terpenes are combined with the natural compound olivetol under heat and pressure to create 99.5%+ pure CBD.
Another advantage of using orange peels is sustainability. Growing hemp requires significant amounts of water and other resources, whereas orange peels are typically discarded as waste.
- Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds with a wide variety of beneficial properties (1).
- Minor cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, and other beneficial cannabinoids found in smaller amounts than CBD. For hemp, THC also counts as a minor cannabinoid.
- Hemp: non-intoxicating cannabis variety with high CBD and low THC levels (less than 0.3%).
- Full-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract containing multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is about 4 times more potent than pure CBD (2).
- Broad-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum CBD, but with THC removed (may contain trace amounts).
- CBD isolate: pure CBD with all other hemp compounds removed.
Peels CBD Product Lineup
For now, Peels only has one product: a pure CBD oil. But the company is working on releasing more products in the near future.
Peels CBD Oil
|CBD Potency||33 mg/ml|
|Volume||30 ml ml|
|Total CBD||1000 mg|
|Cost per mg CBD||$0.10|
|Type||Isolate (made from orange peel)|
|Third-Party Test||View report|
Peels’ CBD oil contains 1000 mg of pure CBD derived from orange peels, giving it a medium-level strength of 33 mg/ml. It’s dissolved in coconut MCT oil and flavored with a mild, natural citrus flavor.
Although we liked this product, we’d like to see more strength options, such as 100 mg/ml and higher.
The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = $0.07.
Peels’ CBD oil costs about $0.10 per mg of CBD, which is considered average. But that’s to be expected because making CBD from orange peels is more costly than extracting it from cannabis. So you’re still getting fairly good value.
Hemp Source and Extraction Process
Instead of using hemp, Peels makes CBD from the terpenes found in orange peels. The resulting pure crystalline CBD is identical to the CBD you’d find in cannabis.
There are several advantages to this. For one, it’s a good option for people who have a negative view of cannabis.
It’s also completely free of THC, whereas hemp-derived products can contain trace amounts even if the THC is removed to levels undetectable by tests.
Peels sends its products for third-party testing at Anresco Laboratories, a food, cannabis, and medical device-testing lab from California. They’re tested for potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
Third-Party Test Results
The third-party test results show that Peels’ CBD oil is free of contaminants and THC. It contains 38.9 mg of CBD per gram, which is equivalent to about 35.8 mg/ml.
That’s 8.5% higher than the label (33 mg/ml or 1000 mg in total), which is accurate since it’s less than a 10% difference.
Shipping & Returns
Peels offers free shipping throughout the U.S. It has a standard 30-day return policy for unopened items.
Customer Service & Reputation
Peels is a relatively new company so it doesn’t have the strong reputation of established CBD brands. However, the few customer reviews of its CBD tincture are positive and we had a good experience trying out their products.
Our Verdict: Good Option for People Who Avoid Cannabis
Peels fills a specific niche in the CBD market: CBD products for people who dislike hemp and cannabis. It’s also a good option for those who want to be 100% certain they avoid THC.
Additionally, the company ticks the right boxes in terms of its reasonable pricing and detailed, up-to-date third-party testing.
Having said that, we want to see more CBD oil strengths. A potency of 33 mg/ml may not be enough for many people, especially when it’s pure rather than full-spectrum CBD.
For example, a CBD tincture with 100 mg/ml or 3000 mg in total would be a good addition.
Overall Rating: 4/5
