Well… Kind of. While I’d like to think this correlation means the more marijuana you smoke, the smarter you get, it’s not quite so black and white:
“In data from the 1970 British Cohort Study, IQ at age 5 was positively associated with cannabis use at age 16 among girls and boys, cannabis and cocaine use at age 30 among women, and amphetamine and MDMA use at age 30 among men. ”
In other words, if you are an inherently smart individual, the odds are higher that you will smoke weed in your adolescence. Hence, smart people use drugs recreationally. Hence the absurd/awesome headline: “Smart Kids Do Drugs.”
Steve Jobs, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Obama, George Bush–the list goes on. They were all smart kids with high IQ’s (well, maybe not Bush…) who dabbled in the drug game.
No, this isn’t exactly earth-shattering news. But it’s positive reinforcement when studies like this arise and bring awareness to the simple fact that marijuana does not make you a lazy screwup. Now excuse me while I light this spliff…
